Oh, absolutely. Scientists say heat waves are more frequent and intense now. Schools that never closed before are now shutting down for days. It’s like nature is playing a prank on education.
In 2026, Baltimore schools closed for three days straight due to heat. That’s a long weekend no one asked for. Kids were thrilled. Parents were not.
And get this: some schools in Spain now start classes at 7 AM to avoid the heat. Yes, 7 AM! That’s before breakfast. Before coffee. Before life even starts. Imagine taking a test at sunrise.
What can you do?
Don’t panic. But do pay attention to your local school’s heat policy. Some have “hot weather drills” just like fire drills. Kids practice drinking water and sitting still. It’s like meditation, but sweatier.
Also, dress code changes are happening. Shorts and sandals are now allowed in many schools. No more itchy uniforms. Kids look like they’re going to the beach, but with backpacks.
And if you’re a parent, buy a portable fan and a water bottle. You’re basically a camp counselor now. Embrace it.
