Meet the star of the show: the False Widow spider. It’s the one that makes headlines every autumn. Its scientific name is Steatoda nobilis, which sounds like a posh villain.
It looks like the infamous Black Widow, but without the lethal punch. Think of it as a Black Widow’s slightly goofy cousin. Its venom is potent enough to give you a nasty local reaction.
We’re talking swelling, redness, and a bit of a fever. For most healthy adults, it’s like a bad bee sting. Not a trip to the morgue. The media loves to hype it up, though.
Fact: Their Bite is Rarer Than Winning a Small Lottery
Here’s the fun part: False Widows are incredibly shy. They only bite if you literally squash them against your skin. They’d rather play dead or run away than start a fight.
Most “spider bites” in the UK are actually skin infections or reactions to other bugs. The spider gets blamed simply because it was nearby. It’s the ultimate case of wrong place, wrong time.
So, if you find one in your shed, just give it a wide berth. You’re not a target. You’re just a giant, weird-looking creature to it.
