Now, the grand finale: the tills. The Gosforth Asda has the standard human-checked lanes and the robotic ‘Scan & Go’ machines. Picking a queue is a serious business. You’re basically playing the Queue Lottery. You choose the lane with the older couple who look professional, but then they start fiddling for exact change and discussing their holiday photos.
The self-service machines are a law unto themselves. They beep at you for ‘unexpected item in bagging area’ even when you haven’t put anything there. It’s a passive-aggressive relationship you never signed up for. But then you get the miracle machine that just works, scans your items fast, and you’re out in under a minute. That feeling? Priceless.
