What if you want to cook your rice in broth, or with garlic and onions? Same rules apply. Liquid is liquid. Just make sure you’re measuring that broth at the same ratio. One cup rice to 1.5 cups broth. Your rice won’t know the difference.
And if you’re doing a rice cooker? Check your manual, but most call for a 1:1 ratio because of how the cooker traps steam. Yes, it’s a shorter ratio! Rice cookers are efficient little wizards. But for stovetop, stick with 1:1.5 soaked or 1:1.25 unsoaked.

What About the "Finger Trick"?
You know the old trick—stick your finger in the water above the rice and measure from the top of the rice to the first knuckle? Ignore it. That’s for medium-grain rice. Basmati is too tall and thin. That trick will give you a soupy mess.
Use a measuring cup. Your finger doesn’t have ounces. Unless you’re a chef who can eyeball it, in which case, why are you reading this article? Go cook, you legend.
