In some cultures, flying black bugs are omens. In parts of Ireland, a sudden swarm of gnats is said to predict rain—they’re actually responding to dropping barometric pressure. In Japan, the firefly is celebrated, but the humble black gnat gets a wink in old haiku.
Fun fact: Fruit flies were the first creatures sent into space. In 1947, the U.S. launched a V-2 rocket carrying a payload of fruit flies to study radiation effects. They returned alive—and promptly started breeding. That’s resilience.
Also, a single female fruit fly can lay up to 500 eggs in her two-week life. If you see one, you’re basically hosting a reality show called “The Gnatchelor.”
