Let’s talk about the name for a second. “Looking Glass.” It makes you think of Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole, right? Well, step inside this nursery in Tooting, and you kind of do tumble into a world that’s a little topsy-turvy. Not in a bad way—in a way that makes you see childhood differently.
You walk in expecting just another nursery, and you get a place where the staff actually use words like “schema” and “loose parts play” without sounding like robots. (I nodded along for the first three months, pretending I knew what a “heuristic play basket” was. Spoiler: it’s just a box of interesting things. I felt so smart when I finally figured that out.)
What Actually Happens Behind the (Looking) Glass
The routine isn’t just naps and crackers. It’s a delicate, highly choreographed chaos. One moment they’re learning about composting by actually touching soil—which my son then transferred to my car seat upholstery, thanks, kid—and the next, they’re doing a “yoga freeze” in the garden.
I’m not sure who gets more out of the yoga sessions: the children, or the staff who just need them to stand still for three seconds. I’ve peeked through the window (yes, I’m that parent) and seen a teacher doing a perfect downward dog while a toddler uses her spine as a bridge for a toy train. That’s multi-tasking. That’s skill.
