But here’s the kicker: if you’re actively planning to kill someone again, the therapist has a legal and ethical duty to alert authorities. That’s called “duty to warn,” and it’s non-negotiable. So no, you can’t treat therapy as a confessional booth where you whisper “I’m about to off my neighbor” and expect a pat on the back. That secret stays only if you keep it to yourself.
What About Self-Defense or an Accident?
Let’s say you killed someone in self-defense, or it was a tragic car crash. That’s a different beast. That’s trauma, not a crime in the therapy room. Therapists are trained to handle these stories without judgment. They’ll help you unpack the guilt, the nightmares, the way you flinch at sirens. You can say, “I killed someone,” and they’ll hear “I’m drowning in shame.” And they’ll throw you a life raft, not handcuffs.

They’re not informants, but they’re not above the law either. So, if you’re wanted for murder, maybe don’t lead with “So, about that cold case…” until you’ve talked to a lawyer.
