A good commercial seed cleaner isn’t cheap, but neither is buying new seed because you ruined your own batch. Think of it as therapy for your combine harvester. A few thousand quid now saves you from crying into your tea later.
And remember: a cleaner that’s sat in a barn for five years is just a very expensive lawn ornament. Look for one that’s been loved, not neglected. Check the screens for holes, the fans for dust bunnies the size of your dog, and the frame for rust that looks like a map.
Where to look in Manchester
The usual spots are agricultural dealers near the M60 ring road or the big yards out towards Trafford. But don’t sleep on online marketplaces. Just be prepared for the classic seller line: “It’s only been used for two seasons, mate.” Two seasons on a UK farm is like two decades in dog years.
Ask to see it run. If the seller hesitates, that’s a red flag bigger than the Manchester United scoreboard. A good machine will start on the first pull—or at least the first three pulls.
