Not everything was shot at Mountain Lake. The famous “lift” scene in the water required a second location: Lake Lure in North Carolina. The water there is deeper, clearer, and surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. Patrick Swayze allegedly asked for extra takes just to enjoy the view.
The exterior shots of the resort’s grand entrance were filmed at a different spot entirely. The main gate you see in the movie is actually the entrance to Camp Green Cove, a nearby summer camp for girls. It’s still operating, and they don’t love tourists wandering through, so respect the privacy.
The “Dirty Dancing” Legacy: A Real-World Pilgrimage
Every summer, Mountain Lake Lodge hosts a Dirty Dancing weekend where fans dress up in late-60s fashion and reenact scenes. The highlight is a mass “lift-off” at the lake, often led by the film’s original choreographer. It’s kitsch, it’s sweaty, and it’s absolutely joyous.
Cultural reference check: The film’s famous line, “Nobody puts Baby in a corner,” came from a script note by Eleanor Bergstein, the screenwriter. She based it on her own teenage summers in the Catskills. So replicating the experience is, in a way, a tribute to a real girl’s coming-of-age.
