Season 11, the final season, tries to fill the gap by giving more screen time to Debbie, Lip, and even Carl. But let’s face it: Debbie as the family matriarch is like asking a toddler to drive a bus. She tries, but she crashes a lot. Lip’s struggles feel familiar, but without Fiona, the emotional weight is just… lighter. Like a sad, shrug-worthy lightness.

And then there’s Frank. He spends most of the season chasing a stupid fantasy about a lost treasure, which is basically a metaphor for the show itself—desperately searching for something that’s already gone. Deep, right? I know, I’m a poet.
What the cast has said about Fiona’s return
In interviews, the cast has been super careful. John Wells, the showrunner, once said they “left the door open” for Fiona, but Emmy Rossum never walked through it. William H. Macy (Frank) joked that Fiona was “probably sipping cocktails in the Bahamas” while the family burned down around her. Funny, but also a little sad.
I get it—actors move on. But you can’t help feeling a little cheated. The final season felt like a family dinner where one person’s chair is empty, and everyone pretends not to notice. We noticed, writers. We definitely noticed.
