Do not fight the system. Accept your fate. You will leave with a small, overpriced bag of “Edinburgh Castle Rock” that’s just literal stones from the courtyard. I bought two. I gave one to my neighbor and claimed it had been “blessed by a ghost piper.” She keeps it on her mantlepiece to this day.
Honestly, the shop is the real final boss of the castle experience. You’ve conquered the battlements, the Great Hall, the prison. But the ultimate challenge is leaving the gift shop without buying a mug that says “My Husband Went to Edinburgh and All I Got Is This Lousy T-Shirt.” Spoiler: you won’t succeed. And that’s hilarious. Your wallet will weep, but your mantelpiece will look extremely patriotic. Go on, buy the tiny cannon. You know you want it.
