Care home food is the Rosetta Stone of online reviews. If the food is good, everything else is forgiven. If it’s bad, you’re burning the place down.
Rushey Mead Manor’s culinary reputation is… split. “The Sunday roast is divine,” sings one resident’s son. “My mother had three helpings of the sponge cake.” Lovely, right?
Then another reviewer snaps: “The soup was cold, the bread was stale, and the ‘vegetable medley’ was clearly a frozen bag from Lidl.” Who is right? Probably both. The chef might be a hero on Wednesdays and a villain on Fridays.
My take? Every care home has a food person and a complainer person. You just have to find your tribe.
The Staff: Angels or Robots?
This is where the reviews get fascinatingly contradictory. Multiple people use the word “angels” to describe the nurses. “They go above and beyond,” they say.
But then you read: “The night staff ignored my call button for 40 minutes.” Forty minutes. That’s a long time when you need the loo.
The trick is to look for patterns. Do most reviewers note that the management is responsive to complaints? Yes, actually—a lot of them mention that complaints get resolved quickly. That’s a green flag.
