Real red-billed hornbills have an incredible skill: they can catch prey in midair with their beaks. That means if The Lion King was historically accurate, Zazu could have snatched a snake out of the sky while scolding Simba. Multi-tasking! Disney left that heavy sequin off his resume.
Also, these birds eat everything. Fruit, insects, small reptiles. Basically, the vacuum cleaners of the savanna. So when Zazu wasn’t on screen, he was probably a walking, squawking garbage disposal. Efficient and hungry.
Wait, Is Zazu a Boy or a Girl?
Here’s where it gets weird. In the original 1994 film, Zazu is voiced by Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean himself!)—so he’s clearly a male. But in the 2019 live-action remake, Zazu was voiced by John Oliver. Still male. But here’s the kicker: in some international versions, Zazu is played by a female voice actor. So your childhood icon might be a secret lady bird. Plot twist.
And if you look at real hornbills, males and females look almost identical. The only way to tell them apart is by behavior. Which means Zazu’s gender is a mystery wrapped in a blue feathered suit. Honestly, that makes him/her even cooler.
