Shout out to Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue. They deal with this every day. And they rescue cats. And they give talks at schools.
One firefighter today reportedly said, "It’s just a rubbish fire, mate." He said it with a straight face. That is peak British resilience.
Also, they get to drive a big red truck with sirens. Let’s be honest. We’re all a little jealous of that.
The Aftermath: What Now?
The smoke has cleared. The smell is fading. The guy whose vape battery started it is probably buying a new one at Boots right now.
Reading will carry on. The trains will be delayed anyway. The coffee shops will stay open. Life goes on.
But for a few minutes today, we were all fire watchers. We were connected. We were worried. And then we went back to doom-scrolling.
That’s the magic of a little fire in Reading. It’s a tiny thrill in a mostly normal day. So next time you smell smoke, don’t panic. Just think: "Is it Greggs? Or is it my lunch?"
Probably both.
