Check your bananas. Look near the stem. If you see a soft, brown spot, peel it. A little white worm might wave at you.
Same with tomatoes, peaches, and mangoes. Any overripe fruit is a potential nursery. Your trash can is a daycare center.
If you see tiny flies near your sink, larvae are somewhere nearby. Behind the fridge? Under the fruit bowl? They’re hiding in plain sight.
The smell test
Rotten fruit smells like apple cider vinegar mixed with sadness. That’s what attracts the adult flies. They love it like we love pizza.
Once they lay eggs, the larvae amplify the smell. It’s a vicious, stinky cycle. Your kitchen becomes a microbrewery for bugs.
But here’s the kicker: you probably ate some larvae already. Don’t freak out. They’re safe to eat. A little extra protein, right?
