The secret to a great GoT-style show isn’t just dragons—it’s complex characters who make you cheer for their downfall one episode and cry for their survival the next. House of the Dragon is the obvious heir, diving deep into Targaryen civil war with a pace that feels like a slow-burn political thriller. But did you know that the show’s dragon-riding scenes are partially inspired by real 15th-century jousting manuals? Fun fact: the “blood magic” rituals are based on actual medieval folklore.
If you crave the feel of Westeros but want a fresh landscape, Shadow and Bone delivers a Grishaverse where magic users are hunted and armies clash in a Russian-inspired setting. The show’s “Fold” is a terrifying wall of darkness, a direct nod to the Wall from GoT, but with a twist: it’s alive. Practical tip: watch this one with the subtitles on to catch all the clever hints about the world’s history.
The “Sophisticated Soap Opera” Vibe
What we really loved about Game of Thrones was the gossip—the whispered conversations in corridors, the poisoned wine, the marriages of convenience. The Crown isn’t fantasy, but it captures that same deadly courtly dance. Imagine Cersei Lannister as a British monarch, and you’re halfway there. For a more literal comparison, The Last Kingdom follows a Saxon lord caught between warring kingdoms, featuring real historical figures like Alfred the Great.
Your next binge should be Bridgerton, but with swords. Seriously, replace the ballrooms with battlefields and you get Vikings: Valhalla. It has the same family feuds, strategic marriages, and shocking betrayals—just with fewer dragons and more longboats. Fun fact: the actor who plays Leif Erikson trained for months to throw axes like a pro, and his technique is scarily accurate.
