So, just how big can a king crab get? The largest king crab ever recorded was a whopping 25 pounds (11.3 kg) and had a leg span of over 6 feet (1.8 meters) from claw to claw. That's like the length of a guitar or a large turkey, just to put it into perspective!
But what's really interesting is that king crabs can grow at an incredible rate, especially during their first few years of life. They can increase their size by up to 50% in just one year, which is like a human growing from 5 feet to 7.5 feet tall in just 12 months - crazy, right? This rapid growth is likely due to their diet of plankton, clams, and other small marine animals.
As king crabs mature, their growth rate slows down, but they can still reach massive sizes. The average adult king crab can weigh around 10-15 pounds (4.5-6.8 kg) and have a leg span of up to 4 feet (1.2 meters), which is still pretty impressive. But have you ever wondered what the largest king crab species is?
