Water softeners aren’t silent. They make noises—gurgles, whooshes, clicks. During regeneration (usually at 2 a.m., because why not?), it should sound like a toilet flushing and a washing machine having a party. If you never hear a sound? Red flag.
Go stand near it. Listen for a minute. No noise? Your softener might be unplugged, out of salt, or just broken. If it’s making a constant grinding sound, that’s also bad—like a sad robot. Normal sounds = working. Silence or chaos = broken.
The Salt Check
Open the lid and look inside. Do you see salt—actual, solid, lumpy salt? If it’s just a soggy mush on the bottom, or worse, a solid block that looks like a salt mountain? That’s “salt bridging.” It means your softener isn’t pulling in salt to do its job. You need to break it up.
How to Tell if Water Softener is Working Properly? (Major Signs
If there’s no salt at all? Well, duh, it can’t soften without fuel. Keep the salt level at least half full. And use the right kind—solar or evaporated salt pellets, not the cheap rock stuff. Your softener is picky. Feed it well.
