Here’s the thing: we obsess over page counts like we’re comparing gym memberships. Length is just a number. The Odyssey feels shorter than it is because every scene is a banger. There’s no filler. No “chapter seventeen where Odysseus debates the merits of olive oil.” It’s all action, longing, and the occasional god flipping a switch just to mess with you.
Compare that to a modern novel. I once read a 400-page thriller that felt like it took ten years because the author described every single sandwich the detective ate. Homer doesn’t do that. He’s like, “Then they feasted,” and moves on. Efficient.

The splits: Books, not chapters
The Odyssey is broken into 24 books (ancient chapters). Each book is roughly the length of a long New Yorker article. You could easily read one during your lunch break or while hiding from your toddler behind the couch. One book per day—that’s less than a month. Your coffee order has more steps.
I know a guy who read it on his commute, one book per train ride. He finished it in three weeks and claimed it was more satisfying than his entire newsfeed. That’s because Odysseus never asks you to “like and subscribe.” He just stabs a guy and then cries about his wife. Relatable.
