The show ended on Fox after Season 15. Yes, it ended. For a whole year, we had no Idol. Then ABC picked it up in 2018. They counted Season 16 as the reboot launch.
So now we have two confusing timelines. Fox did 15 seasons. ABC has done 7 more (through 2026). Total: 22. Got it? Don’t worry, nobody keeps track on the first try.
Even the show’s own website gets it wrong sometimes. It’s a delightful mess. Like a high note that cracks—but you still clap anyway.
Quirky Season Highlights
Season 5 gave us the Taylor Hicks win. He danced like your dad at a wedding. And he won. Proof that soulfulness beats polish every time.
Season 7 had David Cook, the rock guy. He beat David Archuleta, the baby-faced crooner. That finale got 97 million votes. Yes, that’s more than some presidential elections.
Season 11 featured Jessica Sanchez. She was 16 and sang like she’d lived three lifetimes. She came second, but everyone remembers her chills-inducing performances.
