Here’s where it gets fun: you don’t need to buy the whole spaceship. Rides are available! Companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin sell tickets to space tourists. A seat on a SpaceX Crew Dragon? About $55 million per person for a trip to the ISS. That’s a lot, but it includes killer views and zero gravity.
For a shorter thrill, Blue Origin’s New Shepard offers a 10-minute hop to the edge of space for around $500,000 per seat. That’s like buying a mansion in one city and immediate bragging rights. Or you could just buy a really nice sports car—but that doesn’t come with a weightless selfie.
And if you’re thinking, “Can I just buy a used spaceship?”—yes, surprisingly. Private companies sometimes sell old rockets, but they’re usually for museums or spare parts. A decommissioned Soviet capsule might go for $1 million at auction. Still not pocket change.

Why we should care about these insane prices
It’s easy to scoff at billion-dollar price tags. But every dollar spent pushes innovation forward. Because of these investments, launch costs have dropped by 90% over the last 20 years. That means more satellites, more science, and maybe your grandkids will book a space vacation.
Think about it: the first iPhone cost $599, and now we carry supercomputers in our pockets. The same logic applies to spaceships. As technology improves and reusability becomes the norm, prices will keep falling. What seems insane today might feel like a bargain tomorrow.
So, how much does a spaceship cost? More than you’ve got in your wallet right now—but less than you think it will be in a decade. Isn’t that a fantastic thought? The future is expensive, but it’s also getting cheaper by the launch.
Next time you look up at the stars, remember: someone out there is spending billions to make those dots closer. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll catch a cheap ride.
