First, the obvious. A single bottle of water can cost anywhere from $0.50 to $4.00. That’s a huge range, right? At a fancy hotel? That bottle might set you back $8.00. Insanity.
But here’s the kicker. Tap water costs roughly $0.004 per gallon. That’s less than half a penny. You are paying 2,000 times more for that fancy plastic bottle. You are buying convenience, not water.
Think of it this way: you’re paying the price of a gallon of gas for a sip of water. That’s a pretty silly trade-off if you ask me.
But Wait, The Water Itself Is Free?
Here’s a fun, mind-bending fact. The water inside that bottle is often just municipal tap water. Yep. Dasani? That’s purified tap water from the city of Detroit. Aquafina? Same deal, just filtered.
You are literally paying a premium for cleaned-up tap water. It’s like paying a chef to boil an egg. Sure, it’s done nicely, but you could have done it yourself for pennies.
Some brands, like Evian or Fiji, are different. They come from actual springs in the French Alps or a volcanic island. That water is older than your grandma. Seriously, Fiji water is rainwater that fell 300 years ago. That’s a cool fact, but does it make it worth $3 a bottle? You decide.
