Stop counting ounces. Seriously. Your body has a built-in sensor. It’s called thirst.
Here’s the only rule you need: Drink when you’re thirsty. Not before. Not after. Just when your mouth feels dry or your brain sends a signal.
But if you want a safety net, use the pee color test. Darker than straw? Have a glass. Clear as water? Slow down. That’s it. No apps. No math.
When to break the rule
There are exceptions. Elderly people lose their thirst signal. So remind Grandma to sip. And if you’re really active—running a marathon or sweating in the sun—drink before you feel thirsty. Your body can’t catch up fast enough.
Also: sick people need more. Fever, vomiting, or diarrhea? That’s a water emergency. Drink clear broth or sports drinks (not necessarily Gatorade; try coconut water).

And finally: If you’re super healthy, don’t overthink this. Your kidneys are expert water managers. They adjust your pee faster than you can say “hydration.”
