Imagine you’re at a picnic and you toss a burrito to your friend. The path of the burrito is a parabola. Let’s say its height is given by h(t) = -16t² + 32t + 4 (time in seconds, height in feet). Find the axis of symmetry to know when the burrito hits its peak altitude—so you don’t try to catch it too early and get salsa in your eye.
Here, a = -16, b = 32. So x = -32 / (2 * -16) = -32 / -32 = 1 second. That’s your axis line: t = 1. The burrito peaks at one second. If you miss it, you’re eating dirt. The parabola laughs at your shame.
Trick for Lazy People (You Know Who You Are)
If you want to skip the formula entirely, you can also find the axis by finding the midpoint of the two x-intercepts. Solve the quadratic (factoring, quadratic formula, whatever), average the two roots, and that’s your x. It’s like the world’s most boring game of “Guess Who?”
But let’s be honest: the formula is faster. Unless you’re a masochist or a seventh grader with extra time, just use x = -b/(2a). Your future self will high-five you.
