I’m not going to lie: ginger grows slooowly. You’ll see a shoot after maybe two to four weeks. Then it’ll look like a tiny, sad bamboo stick for a while. Don’t panic. This is normal.
Keep the compost moist, not wet. Treat it like a friend who’s a bit dramatic—don’t ignore it, but don’t smother it. A spray bottle is great for misting the leaves.
What About The Great Outdoors?
You can move the pot outside in June, once the nights are reliably warm. Put it in a sheltered, partly-shaded spot. But honestly? Most UK summers aren’t hot enough for a big harvest. A greenhouse or a sunny windowsill is your best bet.
If you do put it outside, bring it in when the temperature drops below 10°C. Ginger is a drama queen about the cold—it will sulk and stop growing.
