Color is your second-best friend here. Forget the vibrant green pineapples you see on Instagram—those are usually underripe and destined for sourness. A ripe pineapple wears a uniform of golden yellow, starting from the base and creeping up.
Patchy green is okay; all-over green is a hard pass. Think of it like a banana: green is early, yellow is sweet, and brown is over.
One exception: the “Queen” or “Sugar Loaf” varieties stay greenish when ripe, so always combine the color check with a sniff. That’s your safety net.
Firmness and Squeeze: The Handshake
Give the pineapple a gentle squeeze. It should yield slightly under pressure—like a firm handshake, not a limp one.
If it’s rock hard, it’s not ready; if it’s mushy, it’s past its window. You want that sweet spot of “give but not mush.”
Also, check the bottom: if it’s soft or weeping juice, skip it. That’s the fruit equivalent of a leaky roof—bad news.
