Next, learn the diversion play. Drop a card while loudly complaining about the weather or asking, “Did anyone else see that weird bug?” The chaos distracts. It’s the same trick magicians use, except your assistant is a three of clubs.
Also, keep a poker face by doing math in your head: “If I need to play four fours, and I only have one four, I’ll bluff with two threes and a six, because the six looks like a rotated nine.” Yes, it’s degenerate. Yes, it works.
The Emotional Rollercoaster
You will feel emotions you forgot existed. There’s the panic when you have no eights and must claim a triple. The smugness when someone calls your bluff and they’re wrong. And the sheer, childlike joy of watching your friend’s face as they pick up a pile of 20 cards and their soul visibly leaves their body.
One round of Cheat has more drama than a reality TV reunion. In fact, a tournament in a pub in Ireland once ended with a man shouting “I swear on my mother’s grave!” while holding a six of spades. His mother was alive and well, and the table erupted. Tradition born.
