Hard water is just water loaded with minerals. Mostly calcium and magnesium. It’s not dangerous to drink, but it’s a total nuisance.
It leaves white scum on your dishes. It makes your soap refuse to lather. And it builds up inside your kettle like a tiny limestone cave. Annoying, right?
So how do you know if you’re living with hard water? You test it. Don’t worry, it’s easy. You don’t need a lab coat or a fancy degree.
The soap shake test (my personal favorite)
Grab a clean, clear plastic bottle. Any size works, but a small water bottle is perfect. Fill it about halfway with tap water.
Now, add a few drops of plain liquid soap. Not detergent, just pure soap. Shake the bottle like you’re trying to win a dance contest.
Watch what happens. If you get a ton of fluffy, beautiful bubbles, you have soft water. If you get cloudy water with barely any suds, you have hard water. It’s that simple.
Hate science experiments? Me too. This one takes ten seconds. You’ve got this.
The dish soap detective work
No bottle handy? Fine. Do this in your kitchen sink. Squirt a little dish soap onto a wet sponge.
Rub it around. If it whips up into a massive, frothy cloud, congrats—soft water. If it feels greasy and flat? Yep, hard water.
The soap literally cannot do its job with all those minerals around. It’s like trying to throw a party with uninvited guests. Rude.
