The track itself is a rhythmically complex nightmare for singers. It shifts time signatures like a drunk person changes lanes. But for us listeners, it’s pure joy.
Her key line, “Mother said, ‘Straight ahead, not to delay or be misled,’” becomes a hilarious failure. She gets delayed. She gets misled. She gets eaten.
It’s the ultimate lesson in listening to your mom, delivered via a stomach acid metaphor. Don’t talk to strangers, kids—especially if they compliment your cloak.

The Real Star: The Red Cape
Let’s give a round of applause for the cape. In Act Two, Red uses it as a blanket, a weapon, and a symbol of her lost innocence. That’s one busy piece of fabric.
It also hides a pocket for snacks. I’m not making that up. In the original production, she pulls out a roll from a pocket in her cape. Bread. For the journey. Practical AND symbolic.
You try carrying bread, a knife, and a sense of dramatic irony all in one outfit. It’s a logistical miracle.
