It matters because the myth that “everything is closed” can make you feel trapped. Like you’re failing at the holiday if you don’t have a home-cooked feast. That’s nonsense!

Choosing to go out on Christmas can be the best part of your day. It’s a rebellious little act of joy. It says, “I am not a hostage to tradition. I am going to eat General Tso’s chicken in my pajamas and love it.”
The True Gift Is Flexibility
So this year, don’t stress. If you need a doughnut at 3 PM, go find one. If you want to see a film alone, do it. The world is more open than you think—you just have to lean into the weird, wonderful reality of a modern holiday.
Remember: the Christmas spirit isn’t about rigid plans. It’s about peace, goodwill, and a hot meal—wherever you find it. Whether that’s at a diner booth next to a truck driver or in a queue for the latest superhero epic, you are part of a beautiful, messy community of people doing Christmas their own way.
And that? That’s worth celebrating. Now go forth, find your open door, and order yourself something ridiculous. You’ve earned it. The adventure is just beginning—and you might discover that the best holiday traditions are the ones you accidentally make at 9 PM on Christmas night.
