Your boss might call it “annual leave”. Your coworker will call it “the day we disappear for mulled wine”. In reality, many employers just give you the day off as a bonus. It’s a secret, unofficial holiday. A national wink-wink, nudge-nudge.
Why? Because nothing productive happens on Christmas Eve. Offices turn into ghost towns by 2 PM. Phones ring unanswered. The only serious work is wrapping presents and panicking about the turkey. It’s a cultural ceasefire.
Even the government gets in on the act. Many civil servants get a “privilege day” on Christmas Eve. That’s right: the people who decide bank holidays don’t work on Christmas Eve. Irony, anyone?
What About the Bankers?
You’d think banks would be open, right? After all, it’s called a bank holiday. But banks close early on Christmas Eve. Some don’t open at all. It’s a massive contradiction. The Bank of England itself shuts its doors by lunchtime. They’re setting a bad example, and we love them for it.
So, the official rule is: no holiday. The practical rule is: good luck finding an open bank. It’s a Schrödinger’s holiday. It both exists and doesn’t exist until you check your office email.
