Imagine you’re making a pitcher of lemonade. You stir in sugar and lemon juice until you can’t see any separate bits. Every sip tastes exactly the same—that’s a homogeneous mixture. Apple juice, air, and even the alloy in your wedding ring all fit the bill.

Now picture a muddy puddle. You can see dirt floating around, right? That’s a heterogeneous mixture—the opposite. Distilled water doesn’t play either game. It’s like that friend who shows up to a party but refuses to dance or mingle.

Why Distilled Water is a Pure Substance

Distilled water is made by boiling water into steam, then condensing that steam back into liquid. This process kicks out all the minerals, salts, and impurities—even the stuff that makes tap water taste like a swimming pool.

What’s left is just water molecules. And here’s the kicker: a pure substance has a fixed chemical composition. You can’t separate it into different parts because there’s nothing to separate. Unlike a mixture, you can’t say, “Hey, pour out the hydrogen and give me some extra oxygen.”

I once tried to explain this to a plumber fixing my sink. He laughed and said, “So it’s like a married couple that never fights?” I replied, “No, it’s a couple that’s so boring they never even talk.” He nodded and charged me double.
