Remember when everyone bought an XR in that coral color? It was the “affordable luxury” of 2018, a gateway drug to the Apple ecosystem. It soundtracked your breakup playlists, your pandemic sourdough phase, and those Zoom calls where you wore sweatpants below the frame. It’s a time capsule.
Comparatively, iOS 26 will be the operating system of the “disposable everything” era—features designed to make you upgrade, not to make you happy. The XR stands as a monument to stability over FOMO. Respect the elders.
What to Do Next: The Upgrade Flow Chart
If you want iOS 26, you’ll need an iPhone 17 or newer. That’s a $1,000 investment in a device that folds into a triangle and has a “mood ring” back panel. Is that worth it for better emojis? Probably not.
Instead, try this: put your XR on airplane mode for one hour. Read a physical book. Pet a dog. Notice how little you missed. The real upgrade was the ability to disconnect.
If you must upgrade, look for refurbished iPhone 15 models. They’re the sweet spot—modern enough for iOS 26 compatibility (the 15 hits the A16 minimum), but cheap enough that you don’t need to sell a kidney. Smart money over shiny things.
