So, you’ve accepted the Post Office is a no-go. What now? Lean into the glorious nothingness. Use Boxing Day as a buffer zone. It’s the day to process Christmas, not to chase it. Play that board game your aunt bought you. Go for a walk and look at the twinkling lights on the houses that still haven’t taken them down. Call that friend you only speak to once a year because you’re both too busy.
Do Royal Mail Deliver on Boxing Day in the UK?
And if you absolutely must get something posted—say, a very important gift that can’t wait until the 27th—remember that the Royal Mail still collects from post boxes. Some post boxes are emptied on Boxing Day (though not all, and often later than usual). So you could drop a stamped letter in a red box and hope for the best. But that’s a gamble for thrill-seekers only. You’ve been warned.
Here’s a little story to seal the deal. Last year, my neighbour—let’s call him Greg—ignored all advice. He was determined to send a heavy package to his son in Canada. He drove three miles to a “24-hour” depot. It was closed. He tried another. Closed. He came back grumpy, defeated, and smelling of petrol. I offered him a mince pie and said, “Greg, the postal elves are on strike for one day.” He laughed, ate the pie, and we watched Die Hard together. It was the best Boxing Day we’d had in years.
So, in short: the Post Office is closed on Boxing Day. But really, that’s brilliant news. It gives you permission to be lazy, to be present, and to ignore your to-do list for just one more blissful, glutenous day. Embrace the closed sign. It’s not an obstacle; it’s a gift. Now go find another chocolate.
