You don’t need a telescope. Your naked eyes are the best tool. Binoculars limit your field of view; you want the whole sky. Lie back, let your eyes adjust for 20 minutes (no phone!), and scan the dome above.
Focus on the darkest area away from the Moon. A bright Moon can wash out faint meteors, so check the lunar phase. A new Moon is your best friend; a full Moon is a party pooper.

Bring a friend. Sharing a “Whoa!” moment strengthens the magic. Plus, you can cover more sky—two pairs of eyes catch more streaks than one. Make it a low-key late-night picnic. No pressure, just presence.
The “Tonight” Checklist
Before you head out: check the time (best viewing is usually after midnight until dawn, when your location faces into Earth’s orbital path). Check for the radiant point—the spot the meteors appear to come from—but don’t stare directly at it; watch 30 to 45 degrees away for longer trails.
Set a simple alarm. If the forecast is clear and you’re free, commit to just 15 minutes outside. If you see nothing, go back in. But often, that first flash of light makes the entire night worth it. It’s a low-stakes adventure with high-reward possibilities.
