England is home to a few spiders that can bite you. The most infamous is the false widow spider, especially Steatoda nobilis. It’s a bit of a local celebrity—mostly because the tabloids love a panic headline.
These guys look vaguely like a black widow (hence the name), but they’re far less deadly. A bite from a false widow might sting, cause some swelling, or make you feel a bit groggy—like a mild flu with a local bruise. Yawn, right?
There’s also the tube web spider and the lace weaver spider. Both have venom, yes. But their bites are usually comparable to a bee sting, unless you’re allergic. And let’s be real—most of us don’t even get stung by bees anymore.
