If you’ve got kids, you’ll probably hear about the schools. Witham has a mix of primary schools, and the secondary schools are decent. But more than that, there’s a real sense of community. The local library does story time for toddlers, and the swimming pool runs family sessions where you don’t feel rushed.
There’s also a Men’s Shed group and a community garden. Honestly, it’s the kind of place where your neighbour waves at you even if you’ve only lived there three days. It’s a little corny, but it’s genuine.
The weather (because British people care)
Witham doesn’t have its own microclimate, but somehow the town feels sunnier. Maybe it’s because there’s always a bench to sit on in the Chipping Hill area. Or maybe it’s the way the light hits the old buildings. I’m no meteorologist, but I’ve had more sunny Sunday walks here than anywhere else.

Even when it rains, the local cafes are full of people chatting and pretending to work. It’s cosy, not gloomy. You’ll see someone reading a book with a scone, and you’ll think, “Yeah, that could be me.”
