Okay, don’t throw your scone at me. The shortest day has a secret superpower. After today, the days start getting longer.
Painfully slowly, like a sloth crawling uphill. But they get longer. Tomorrow, you’ll get two extra seconds of light. Whoop-de-doo! But it adds up.
By March, you’ll be blinking in actual sunlight like a mole coming out of its hole. It’s the turning point. The darkness is officially done peaking.
The shortest day of the year is descending on the Northern Hemisphere
you whine. Fair point. The coldest weather actually comes in January. The solstice is the shortest day, not the coldest. Mother Nature is a bit of a troll like that.
How To Survive It Without Losing Your Mind
First, embrace the darkness. Go for a walk at 4 PM. See the Christmas lights in the windows. It’s actually kind of magical. Or at least, it’s not terrifying.
Second, fake it. Get a SAD lamp. You’ll look like you’re giving an interview on a 90s UFO documentary, but it works. Blast that fake sunshine into your eyeballs.
Third, remember the Danish concept of hygge. Get a blanket. Eat a biscuit. Light the aforementioned million candles. It’s not sad; it’s cosy survival mode.
Also, call a friend. Have a whinge. A shared whinge is a halved whinge. “Can you believe it’s dark already?” “I know, right?” Boom. Instant connection.
