In England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, the legal limit for experienced drivers is 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. But if you’re a new driver? That number drops to zero. Well, almost zero.
Technically, the limit for newbies is 20 milligrams. That’s four times lower than the main limit. In Scotland, all drivers—new or old—face the same 20mg cap. So, a Scot who passed yesterday and a Scot who passed in 1985 are equally sober in the eyes of the law.
Why the double standard? It’s because experience matters. Your brain is still learning to react. Alcohol makes that reaction time mushy. The government decided new drivers need a safety net—or a straightjacket, depending on your perspective.
