Coopers Beach isn’t one of those massive, scary holiday parks with neon lights and a permanent queue for a kebab. It’s family-run, which means the fish and chips in the café actually taste like fish, not cardboard. The whole place feels like a hug from a slightly damp, friendly aunt.
The caravan is your home, and it’s surprisingly plush. I had a static caravan with central heating, a proper shower, and a kitchen that had more gadgets than my actual house. It’s like camping, but with Wi-Fi and a flush toilet—the only way adults should ever sleep outdoors.
And the beach? It’s shingle. I know, I can practically hear you groaning. But here’s the surprising fact: Mersea has the warmest sea temperatures in the UK. I didn’t believe it either, until I waded in and didn’t instantly turn into a human popsicle. It’s like the Gulf Stream took a wrong turn and decided to hang out in Essex.
Wildlife: The Unofficial Entertainment
Don’t expect dolphins doing tricks. The main wildlife attraction at Coopers is the aggressive seagull. These aren’t your normal seaside birds; they’re the SAS of the avian world. One stole a whole sausage roll out of my hand, and I have to admit, he deserved it with that level of precision.

But the real stars are the oysters. Mersea is famous for them. You can walk to a shack called The Company Shed and eat oysters so fresh they’re practically still complaining about being caught. It’s a posh date night that ends in a bib and a bin full of shells. Classy.
There’s also a surprising amount of birdwatching. The marshes are full of egrets and curlews, and I spent a solid twenty minutes watching a heron have a staring contest with a crab. The crab won. Nature is brutal, but hilarious.
