The beauty of a street this long is the variety. You get the usual suspects: Superdrug, Ladbrokes, and a phone repair shop that looks like it’s made out of chewing gum and hope. But then you stumble upon the weird little gems. There’s a shop that sells only buttons. Another that appears to be a secret library crossed with a second-hand spoons emporium.

You’ll also find that classic British ritual: the “I’m just looking” shuffle. As you walk, you’ll watch people perform the delicate dance of trying to pass a slow-moving couple without making eye contact. It’s a full-contact sport. And if you see a queue five people deep outside a bakery, you join it without questioning why. That’s just the law of the long high street.
The busker’s paradise
Given the sheer real estate, buskers treat this place like their own personal stage. You'll get one bloke playing “Wonderwall” on a battered guitar near the bank. Then, two hundred metres later, a man with a full drum kit made from buckets. And everyone just walks past, nodding their head to a completely different beat. It’s like walking through a random Spotify playlist with lousy reception.
You never know where a high street ends and a residential street begins. It just... fades out. One minute you’re surrounded by pound shops and vape vendors. The next, you're lost in a housing estate wondering if you’ve accidentally walked into another county. You might have spent your entire child’s inheritance on a pasty and a bus fare.
