Drive about an hour north of Wellington and you’ll find Kaitoke Regional Park. This is the real Rivendell—minus Elves, plus a lot of glowworms after dark.
The site is free to visit. You can swim in the Hutt River or simply sit on a mossy bank and imagine Elrond holding council. The ferns are so tall they feel ancient.
Cultural note: Local Māori mythology speaks of these forests as the domain of Te Taniwha, a water spirit. That’s the same energy Jackson’s crew drew from when filming the Ford of Bruinen scene.
