The official Tube map shows a station called “British Museum” that closed in 1933. Yes, there was once a station right outside. It was tiny, with spiral staircases and gaslights.
That station is now a ghost station. You can still see its old entrance on Bury Place—it’s a graffitied brick archway. Locals call it “the mole hole.”
Why did it close? The escalators were too steep. People kept tripping. So now we walk a bit. Progress, right?
