It’s a three-step checklist for GPs to follow when a patient comes back with the same issue. Instead of just saying “it’s probably nothing” and sending you home again, the doctor has to think differently.
Step one: ask the patient what they really think is going on. Step two: ask about their gut feeling—like, “do you feel something serious is wrong?” Step three: if the doctor isn’t sure, they must arrange a follow-up or a second opinion, not just rely on guesswork.
Why Is It Called Jess’s Rule?
It’s named after Jess, a young woman whose serious condition was missed multiple times by her GP. Her family pushed for change after her story went viral. The rule basically says: “Don’t brush off a patient who keeps coming back.”
Kind of like a check engine light for your body. If the light keeps coming on, you don’t just ignore it—you dig deeper.
