Open a blank Google Sheet. Type random numbers in column A. In column B, write =A1/A2. Now format column B as percentage. Watch the decimal become a bold, confident number. It’s like watching a caterpillar turn into a butterfly, but this butterfly is a lie detector for your spending.
Try this: =RANDBETWEEN(1,100)/100. That gives you a random percentage every time the sheet recalculates. You’ve just created a digital coin flip. Should you eat that leftover pasta? If it’s above 50%, yes. Destiny in a formula.
Google Sheets Percentage Formula (Calculate Percentages with Examples)
Share a sheet with a friend. Put a hidden percentage formula in a cell. Watch them freak out when it changes. “Why is my budget 104%?!” Because you, my friend, are a percentage wizard. They’ll never trust a spreadsheet again.
The Dark Side (But It’s Funny)
Beware of the #DIV/0! error. It happens when you try to divide by zero. Google Sheets screams at you with a red exclamation. It’s not personal—it’s math morality. You cannot divide by zero. The universe forbids it. Use an =IFERROR formula to hide the shame: =IFERROR(A1/B1, “Oops”). Now it’s polite.
Also, never trust a percentage that’s over 100% unless it’s about your effort or pizza consumption. A 150% test score is impossible. But a 150% increase in sales? That’s a bonus check. Google Sheets doesn’t care about your morals. It just calculates.
And remember: percentages add weirdly. A 20% discount followed by a 10% coupon is not a 30% discount. It’s 28% (1 - 0.80.9). Retailers love this math. They bet you won’t check. But you will. Because you are now a percentage ninja.
So go ahead. Make a sheet. Type a formula. Watch your data transform. Percentages aren’t boring—they’re the punchline of a very nerdy joke. And you’re now the comedian. Standing ovation not included, but the formula is.
