Missouri in August is not a joke. It’s humid. It’s sticky. The air feels like a wet blanket. Players call it “soup season.”
During the hardest drills, they don’t just sweat. They disintegrate. Jersey numbers start peeling off. You see puddles where people stood. It’s gross. It’s also where legends are born.
They say you learn more about a person in one double-session than in a whole season. When your legs are jello and your brain is fog, true character shows up. Or it runs to the sideline to puke. Both are valid.
The Quirky Traditions
Every camp has weird rituals. At Missouri State, they have “The Shoe Game.” If you don’t tie your cleats tight enough, a coach will steal one and hide it in the equipment shed. You then have to hop on one foot to find it. It’s humiliating. It’s also hilarious to watch.
Another tradition? The “Freshman Song.” Each rookie has to sing their high school fight song in front of the whole team. Unless you’re from a school with a cool song, you get mercilessly booed. It’s a bonding experience and a public shaming.
