-born in Rome, Italy in 1938, Juan Carlos was the son of Infante Juan, Count of Barcelona, and Princess Maria Mercedes of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. Talk about a royal upbringing, right? He was educated in Spain and later attended the Naval Academy, because, you know, every king needs to know how to sail a ship!
But, let's get back to his reign, shall we? Juan Carlos played a crucial role in defending Spain's democracy during an attempted coup d'état in 1981. It was like something out of a movie, with the king standing strong against the rebels, and in the end, democracy prevailed! He was hailed as a hero, and his popularity soared, which is not always easy for a monarch to achieve.
In his later years, Juan Carlos faced some controversies, including a corruption scandal involving his daughter and son-in-law. But, he took it like a champ, and in 2014, he abicated the throne in favor of his son, Felipe VI. It was a smooth transition, and Juan Carlos got to enjoy his golden years, which, let's be real, he totally deserved after all the drama he went through.
