Because everything is alive, construction doesn’t start until the last possible minute. Most floats are built in secret warehouses starting months in advance, but the flowers go on only days before the parade.

Then, there’s the “flower clock.” These builders are literally racing against time. Roses start to wilt, so they aim to finish decorating just hours before the parade starts.

It’s like baking a birthday cake the night before, except the cake is the size of a bus. Pretty intense, right?

The 55-Foot Height Limit

There are practical rules, too. Like that time a float designer wanted a giant giraffe head that was 60 feet tall. Big no-no.

Floats cannot be taller than 16 feet high without special permission. That’s because of all the low-hanging trees and traffic lights along the 5.5-mile route. You don’t want a floating peacock to decapitate a palm tree.

Width and length are also capped, so everything fits neatly on the street. It’s like Tetris, but with chrysanthemums and confetti cannons.
