Look near your houseplants. That little black fly that walks on the soil? That’s a fungus gnat. It’s not a fruit fly. It’s a soil dweller. Its larvae eat fungus and rotting roots.
Fungus gnats are terrible fliers. They just sort of... float. They look like tiny mosquitos, but they can’t bite. Their only goal is to mate in your damp potting mix. They also love overwatered plants. If you see them, you’re probably watering too much.
Fun trick: stick a yellow sticky trap near the pot. They are obsessed with yellow. It’s like a disco ball for gnats. They can’t resist it.
