Govanhill Baths is a middle finger to the idea that communities are powerless. It’s a lesson in radical patience: they’ve been fighting for 20 years to re-open the pool, and they still haven’t won. But they’ve already won everything else.
Look, I’m not saying you need to occupy a building tomorrow. But next time you see a “For Sale” sign on a local library or a youth centre, remember Govanhill. Remember that a group of people, armed with nothing but keys, rage, and a deep love for a dodgy swimming pool, changed their world.
The Deep End isn’t just a Trust. It’s a way of seeing: that a wet floor, a rusty lock, and a borrowed pair of flip-flops can be the start of a revolution. And if that doesn’t make you want to visit Glasgow, I don’t know what will.
